I hadn’t scheduled a blog post today and I was just going to skip it. But then the news just mentioned that it’s the anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death.
Now, my mother used to lament to me every year that Elvis and Groucho Marx died on the same day and how sad it was that no one remembered the sacred Groucho (and, no, that was not sarcasm) because Elvis overshadowed him. And I got annoyed that the news talked about Elvis and not Groucho.
So, I IMDB’d it and found out my mother was wrong all these years. Elvis died August 16, 1977. Groucho held on a few extra days. He died August 19, 1977.
I’m not upset with the news anymore.
I’m glad your harbored resentments have been released! 🙂
It’s certainly a weight off my shoulder! 🙂
I still remember the day Elivs died.
My best friend and I, (about 11yrs-old at the time), watched our moms cry to each other for hours over him!
I won’t tell you how old I was in August 1977. 🙂
Now if they would have had google in the eighties you could have saved all of that frustration!
Stupid Internet came too late!
I’m so glad you aren’t upset about this anymore. And, isn’t it nice to sometimes get to tell mom they are wrong!
She was close, though. They died the same week, and I’m sure poor Groucho didn’t get the attention he deserved.
I wasn’t all that angry about it in general, but when I heard the guy this morning mention Elvis and not Groucho, I was. 🙂
i’m still upset.
Groucho died 3 days after Elvis and because people were still so overwhelmed by Elvis’s funeral (August 18, 1977), nobody even noticed that Groucho kicked it the next day, except me.
I swear you always said they died the same day. That was my understanding all these years. Oh, well. Anyway, I’m not mad at the news guy from this morning now.
Groucho was born same day as Val
he died same day as my dad
I used to love the Marx brothers movies as a child and Dale and I laughed overselves silly over them a few years ago. Elvis is fascinating. My brother is a huge fan. I had fun seeing an Elvis impersonator perform a few years ago at the Clemens Center, GREAT show! So much fun.
Even three days later, I’m sure Elvis still overshadowed Groucho Marx in the news. Elvis’s death was HUGE.
yes, there was a very small article in the paper announcing Groucho’s death.
it’s cool that Elvis and Groucho are karmically linked by dying so close together. they probably hung out together while they were getting acclimated to their new surroundings.
I see where you mom is coming from. Remember last summer when Michael Jackson died then Farrah Fawcett died just days later. You barely heard anything about her death, but he was front page news for weeks.
Question: Who died five days after Princess Diana?
(Sunday 31 August 1997)
Answer: Mother Theresa.
(September 5th, 1997)
I didn’t know the date of Princess Diana’s death, either. I knew the month.
i remember Mother Theresa dying closely after Princess Diana.
I was thinking the same thing. I remember Diana’s funeral being covered much more in depth that Mother Teresa’s but I don’t think Mother Teresa would of wanted it any bigger deal than it already was.
I remember Bing Crosby died a couple months after Elvis. Their Christmas albums are always in heavy rotation in our house at the holidays.
I love Bing Crosby Christmas music. I’m not a huge fan of Elvis anything, though. I just don’t get it.
One of my favorite Christmas song recordings is of Bing and David Bowie singing little drummer boy. I think it was for the last Christmas show Bing did before he died.
